to do: the louvre and the masterpiece

the louvre and the masterpiece opened a couple of weeks ago at the minneapolis institute of arts and it is definitely on my to do list. i haven’t heard from anyone whose been through the exhibit yet, but it sounds like it is set up to be an interesting discussion of what makes a great work of art, well, great as compared to a mediocre work.
not to mention that i am a sucker for vermeer and the louvre has very graciously loaned the astronomer for the exhibit.
I’m really loving these sketches from Stella Im Hultberg’s new moleskine. Lovely stuff.

Since I seem to be on an “art made from natural(ish) things” kick this week, I suppose I can’t leave that inspirational well without posting something about Andy Goldsworthy whose documentary rivers & tides everyone should see at least once.
Here’s a clip from it:
Things To Do in Denver When You're Focus Grouping.

I got sent to Denver last week and visited (on several occasions) the Appaloosa Grill where I discovered the artwork of Jeremy Charles Burns and the musical stylings of The Freight for whom a google search resulted in squat. A Damien Rice sounding, strings, guitar, snare drum kind of band that rocked the hoose (I was sitting next to a Canadian). Sounded a bit like the locally broken up band Bellwether. A good time was had by all who were present.

I’m not sure if I’ve posted about him before, but if I didn’t it was surely an oversight. You see, I love James Jean, his work is so beautiful. He has recently stopped doing commercial work to focus on fine art and has a show up at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. If you happen to be in the area, you should definitely check it out. If not, well then you, like me, can just drool over the pictures.
Arrested Motion also has some great pics of the show. (including the one above)

australian stacey rees’ watercolors are so lovely! and reasonably priced too (in her etsy shop wallnut). gotta love that.

I have been following Audrey Kawasaki’s work for awhile now. She just posted some new paintings from her latest show on her blog and they are gorgeous. Her work is usually relatively light and ethereal but these have taken a darker turn which makes them a bit more intense. Very beautiful.
The shot above is a progress shot of one of the pieces that I thought was quite an interesting look into her process.
(her work is somewhat NSFW, so click at your own risk.)
